In a world where passions often intersect, few stories capture the spirit of creativity and adventure like that of Hana McEvilly. At just 24 years old, Hana stands out not only as an incredible surfer but also as a multi-talented artist whose work is a vivid reflection of her life by the ocean. Born into a family of competitive surfers, she has always been attuned to the rhythms of the sea, a bond that shapes both her athletic pursuits and artistic endeavors.
Growing up in a household where surfing was a way of life, Hana learned to ride the waves almost as soon as she learned to walk. Some of her favorite childhood memories are from those days spent tandem surfing with her dad, laughing and gliding through the water together. By the time she turned 7, Hana was ready to take on the ocean solo. These days, you can catch Hana gracefully hanging 10 in the beautiful waters of Oahu.
“Find a friend who knows the ocean.”
An Artistic Journey
Hana's artistic journey began at a young age, when she discovered the joy of painting and drawing cartoons and manga. Her innate talent blossomed into a diverse career that includes painting, drawing, digital animation, ceramics, and textiles. Each medium allows her to explore different aspects of her identity and experiences, weaving her life story into her art.
A significant influence on Hana's work is Hawaiian culture and mythology. The vibrant colors of the islands and the rich narratives of their heritage are beautifully interwoven into her creations, allowing her to express a deep cultural connection through her art. This blend of culture, surfing and artistry not only celebrates her island heritage but also serves as a reminder of the importance of storytelling in the creative process.
Inspiring Others
Hana hopes her art does more than just decorate a wall—it’s about making a real impact on the people who experience it. For her, art is a way to spread positivity, to lift people up, and to make them feel something deep inside. She wants her work to act as a mirror, helping viewers see themselves reflected in the stories and emotions she captures. Hana’s ultimate hope is that her work invites others to find their voice, tell their own stories, and feel a sense of belonging in the larger narrative she’s creating through her art.
“If someone can look at my art and say that makes me feel more understood or more seen, then that’s a huge accomplishment for me.”
As she navigates her artistic career, Hana dreams of collaborating with renowned institutions like the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) or the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Such collaborations would not only elevate her work but also allow her to share her unique perspective on Hawaiian culture and the natural world with a broader audience.
Peering into 2025
Looking ahead, Hana is excited to continue expanding her artistic horizons. With plans to explore new mediums, collaborate with other creatives, and take her work to even bigger audiences, the next chapter in her journey promises to be just as dynamic as the waves she rides.
